The answer depends on your group, your budget, and how seriously you take the golf. But there is a sweet spot, and most groups who get the length wrong end up either rushing through it or stretching it out until the energy flags.
The Short Answer
Five to seven full days is ideal for most golf groups. That gives you four to five rounds at different courses, time for a rest day, good meals without feeling rushed, and enough space to actually feel like you have been away. It also justifies the travel time and the effort of coordinating a group trip.
A long weekend, four days, works if you stay focused and keep the itinerary tight. Anything under three days rarely feels satisfying, especially if you are flying from the UK or further afield. You spend more time in transit than you do enjoying the place.
Why Not Play Golf Every Day?
You can. Some groups do. But most find that playing five or six consecutive rounds, especially at courses like Monte Rei where you are walking several kilometres in warm weather, leaves them tired by day four. The rounds get less enjoyable, the scores get worse, and the trip starts to feel like a slog rather than a break.
A rest day in the middle of the week resets everything. Spend it in Tavira, take a boat out to the beach islands, have a long lunch by the river. Come back to the golf refreshed. The rounds on either side of the rest day are nearly always better.
The Week Format
The format that works best for a week in the Eastern Algarve, based on what most groups find most enjoyable:
Arrive on Sunday. Drive from Faro, settle into the villa, have dinner in Tavira. No golf, no agenda. Just arrive properly.
Monday and Tuesday: two courses from Quinta da Ria, Quinta da Cima, or Castro Marim. Good golf, but not the headline act. Good for getting your eye in before Monte Rei.
Wednesday: rest day. Tavira, the beach, a long lunch. No golf clubs.
Thursday: Monte Rei. The flagship round of the week. Play it when you are fresh and your swing is warm from the previous two days.
Friday: a second round at whichever course felt unfinished, or Castro Marim if you have not played it.
Saturday: travel home.
That is five rounds across six playing days with one rest day built in. It feels complete without feeling like a march.
The Long Weekend Format
If a week is not possible, a long weekend from Thursday to Sunday works well. Fly Thursday morning, play Thursday afternoon (Quinta da Ria is a good opener, it plays fast and is forgiving). Full day Friday at Quinta da Cima. Full day Saturday at Monte Rei. Sunday morning at Castro Marim before heading back to Faro for an afternoon or evening flight.
Four days, four rounds, two good nights in the area. It is tight but it works. The key is flying early Thursday to maximize the first playing day, and not being too ambitious about afternoon golf on the first day after travel.
What Actually Makes a Golf Trip Feel Right
It is not the number of rounds. Most golfers, when they look back on a good trip, remember the dinners, the conversations in the clubhouse after a round, the drive through the countryside on the way to the course. The golf is the frame, not the entire picture.
Build in enough time to breathe. Do not pack so many rounds in that every day is a race to the first tee. A week that includes four or five great rounds, two or three excellent dinners, and an afternoon in Tavira doing nothing in particular is better than a week of seven rounds that leaves everyone exhausted.
We handle the itinerary
Pin & Palm builds the week around your group. Tee times at the right courses on the right days, a villa to come back to, and nothing left to organise.

How many days do you need for a golf holiday in Portugal?
Five to seven days is the sweet spot for most groups. This gives you time for four or five rounds at different courses, recovery days, good meals, and some time to see the area. A long weekend of four days works if you keep it tight. Anything under three days rarely feels like a proper trip.
How many rounds of golf can you fit into a week in Portugal?
Most groups play four to five rounds in a week. Playing every day is possible but leaves you tired and makes the later rounds less enjoyable. A rest day in the middle of the week tends to make the whole trip better.
Is a long weekend in Portugal worth it for golf?
Yes, if you keep it focused. Flying Thursday or Friday, playing Friday afternoon, all day Saturday, and half of Sunday before flying home gives you two and a half solid rounds. It is a tight itinerary but works well for groups who cannot commit to a full week.
What is the ideal itinerary for a golf week in the Eastern Algarve?
Arrive Sunday, settle in and explore Tavira. Monday: Quinta da Ria. Tuesday: Quinta da Cima. Wednesday: rest day, Tavira, beach. Thursday: Monte Rei. Friday: Castro Marim or a second round at a favourite. Saturday: travel home. Five rounds, a rest day, good food throughout.
