When most people think about a golf holiday in Portugal they think about the Golden Triangle. Vilamoura, Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo. These resorts have defined Algarve golf for decades. They are well run, the courses are excellent, and they are easy to book. But there is another option an hour further east that not enough golfers know about.

The eastern Algarve is a different world. The landscape is wilder, the towns are smaller, the coastline is less built up. And sitting within it are three courses that would hold their own against anything in the Golden Triangle: Monte Rei, Quinta da Ria and Quinta da Cima. Here is how the two stack up.

The Courses

The Golden Triangle has some genuinely world-class golf. The Old Course at Quinta do Lago and the Royal Course at Vale do Lobo are among the best in Europe. Vilamoura has five courses between them and you could spend a week without playing the same one twice.

The eastern Algarve has fewer options but does not suffer for it. Monte Rei is a Jack Nicklaus design that consistently ranks as one of the top courses in Portugal and is better maintained than many courses in the Golden Triangle. Quinta da Ria plays alongside the Ria Formosa natural park and offers a setting unlike anything on the western Algarve. Quinta da Cima is longer, set on Bermuda grass fairways lined with olive trees, and feels like a different region entirely. Three courses is enough for a five-day trip and the variety across them is more than sufficient.

Monte Rei is as good a golf course as you will find anywhere in southern Europe. The fact that most people have not heard of it is part of the appeal.

The Atmosphere

This is where the difference is most noticeable. The Golden Triangle is a resort area. It is polished and efficient and it works well, but it does not feel like Portugal. The hotels are international, the restaurants cater to tourists, and in peak season the courses are busy.

The eastern Algarve has not been developed in the same way. The town of Tavira, half an hour from Monte Rei, is one of the most beautiful in the Algarve and feels genuinely Portuguese. The villages along the coast are quiet. The Ria Formosa stretches for miles without a marina or a resort hotel in sight. For golfers who want a trip with a sense of place as well as good golf, the east offers something the Golden Triangle cannot.

Crowds and Pace of Play

At peak times the Golden Triangle courses are busy. Tee times are competitive, the car parks are full by mid-morning, and slow play can be a problem on popular layouts. It is manageable but it is part of the deal.

Monte Rei has strict tee sheet management and the course never feels crowded. Quinta da Ria and Quinta da Cima are similarly relaxed. On a winter or shoulder-season trip you can play a full round at Monte Rei and feel like you have the place to yourself. The pace of play in the east is noticeably different.

Getting There

Both areas are served by Faro Airport. The Golden Triangle is around 20 to 30 minutes from the airport. The eastern Algarve is 45 minutes to an hour. It is a small difference but worth factoring in if you are doing a short break with a lot of golf packed in.

Golden Triangle

More courses to choose from, well-established infrastructure, easier to book independently, busier in peak season, resort atmosphere, shorter transfer from Faro.

Eastern Algarve

Quieter, more authentic feel, Monte Rei is the headline course, Ria Formosa setting at Quinta da Ria, better for groups wanting privacy, slightly longer transfer.

Which One?

If you want flexibility, a wide choice of courses and a proven resort infrastructure, the Golden Triangle delivers. It is the right choice for a large group with varied preferences or for someone who has never been to Portugal and wants a straightforward introduction.

If you want a golf trip that feels like more than just a golf trip, where the setting and the courses both leave an impression, the eastern Algarve is the more interesting choice. Monte Rei alone is worth the extra 30 minutes in the car.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the eastern Algarve good for a golf holiday?

Yes. The eastern Algarve has three strong courses — Monte Rei, Quinta da Ria and Quinta da Cima — set in quieter, more authentic surroundings than the Golden Triangle. Monte Rei in particular is considered one of the best courses in Portugal.

How far is the eastern Algarve from Faro Airport?

The eastern Algarve courses are roughly 45 minutes to one hour from Faro Airport, compared to around 20 to 30 minutes for the Golden Triangle resorts. The extra drive is straightforward on the A22.

Is the eastern Algarve better than the Golden Triangle for golf?

It depends on what you want. The Golden Triangle has more courses and better resort infrastructure. The eastern Algarve offers better quality and quieter conditions at Monte Rei, a more authentic setting, and significantly less crowded courses.

What courses are in the eastern Algarve?

The main courses are Monte Rei Golf & Country Club (Jack Nicklaus design), Quinta da Ria (set alongside the Ria Formosa natural park) and Quinta da Cima (longer, Bermuda grass fairways, olive tree-lined). All three are within 20 minutes of each other.

Is the eastern Algarve good for non-golfers too?

Yes. The town of Tavira is one of the most beautiful in Portugal. The Ria Formosa natural park is excellent for walking and birdwatching. The beaches on the barrier islands are quieter and less developed than those near Albufeira or Vilamoura.
